All Things Planet Earth

Earth Hour

By Sarah

This year the first ever global election went on between Earth and Global Warming. To Vote Earth this year people turned off their lights for one hour on March 28th 2009 between 8:30pm – 9:30pm. To vote for global warming people did not turn off their lights. Last year 2.2 million people in Sydney Australia turned off their lights on March 29th 2008 during Earth Hour. 934 cities and towns and 80 countries participated in Earth Hour in 2008.

This year the Vote Earth campaign was looking for 1 billion votes for Earth to be presented to the world leaders at the Global climate change conference in Copenhagen. This conference will determine official government policies to take action against Global Warming. According to, “On March 28 hundreds of millions of people in over 4,000 cities and towns in 88 countries voted Earth.” Now people will finally have a say against global warming.

You can help change the world. Look out for Earth Hour next year, and encourage others to also participate.  VOTE EARTH!!

Endangered Species

By Allie

Why save endangered animals? Plants and animals hold medicine, crops that we use for food, products that all communities use, artistic value, and a healthy ecosystem. Endangered Species are part of our environment, so if we want them in our future we must protect them now.

How does endangerment occur? One reason endangerment occurs is the irresponsible actions of people. Some of these actions includes overexploitation, which is the overuse of or the over pursuit of a certain species. An example of overexploitation is whales. Due to the whaling in the 20th century, it has brought many species of whales to low population sizes.

How can I help? There are many ways you, personally can help. One thing I decided to do is to inform all you readers by telling you this information. You could do this to: tell a friend, family member, or a teacher about endangerment. When you visit a national park, make sure you obey the park regulations. Respect the animals, plants, and environment if you visit a farm. Other ideas might be to make a birdfeeder or birdbath, support or start an organization, or put on a puppet show by making puppets. Always remember to help save endangered species!
