Computer Safety – At Home and Online
By Ms. Paine
Is your pc computer running slowly? Keeping your computer clean and safe is one of the most important things you can do in order to protect all of your valuable information. If you use downloading programs like Limewire or BearShare – which you shouldn’t! they are horrible for your computer! – or download games online – Diner Dash, anyone? – then you probably have plenty of files hiding in your computer that shouldn’t be there – malware. Malware, according to webopedia.com, is “short for malicious software, software designed specifically to damage or disrupt a system, such as a virus or Trojan horse.”
Now, how can you clean your computer? First, update your windows updates! If you have a yellow shield with an exclamation point in it, click on it and update your computer! Never ignore those updates! If you have an antivirus program, such as McAfee or Norton, update that program as well, and run it. If yours is out of date or you do not have an antivirus program at all, AVG is a great free software program. Go to http://free.avg.com to download it. To further protect against malware, one of today’s best programs for defense is Malwarebytes (www.malwarebytes.org). This provides thorough protection against malware.
However, in order for any of these programs to be effective, you must update and run them frequently, at least once every two weeks. And please, if you are still an Internet Explorer user, download Mozilla Firefox. It attracts less malicious files and is much faster.
Until next time, stay safe online…
